Roblox

Roblox has been dubbed the World’s largest social platform for ply. It is a massively multiplayer online gaming platform that has gained huge patronage by gamers and game developers. The platform which was released in April 6, 2006 allows users to play a variety of games created by other users as well as design their own games. It has been described basically as a user-generated gaming site that hosts social network virtual world games constructed of Lego-like virtual blocks. Published under Roblox Corporation, the platform currently runs on Android, iOS, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, Oculus Rift, and Xbox One.

Development:

Roblox was principally developed by David Baszucki and co-founder Erik Cassel. They started the project in 2014 as DynaBlocks. When the program became available for PCs in 2005, it was renamed Roblox. In 2006, it was finally released officially under the Roblox Corporation that has Baszucki as the CEO. Since its release, development has not seized.

In March 2007, in compliance with the Children Online Privacy Act (COPPA), Roblox added a safe chat feature that limited the users younger than 13 to communicate through selection of predefined messages from the menu. The Builders Club, a premium membership club was added in August 2007.

Another important feature on the platform, Smooth Terrain, was added in May 2015. This was specifically made to increase the graphical fidelity of the terrain and make the physics engine more realistic. A couple of other notable improvements has been made on the platform including the replacement of the safe chat feature by a more inclusive system based on a whitelist that regulates communication and allows young users to create contents in the website too.

Roblox Studio:

The Roblox studio is the tool used in the development of Roblox models and scripts which when combined, become places. Opening a new place in the websites requires you to log into your account and clicking on ‘file’ menu, then ‘new’. The ‘explorer’ displays all the objects available in any of your games.

Clicking an object will select it and you can perform a couple of actions on any of the objects. The ‘property’ panel displays all the properties of the selected objects and they can be modified accordingly. You can also use the ‘toolbar’ to insert models made by other users. There are several other features in the Roblox studio and they enable users to build games with ease.

Gameplay:

The Roblox studio briefly described above is the proprietary engine that Roblox users use to create their games. Users are expected to be conversant with the programming language Lua as this is what is used in the Roblox engine. Plugins can also be generated with Lua and used at the studio.

The platform allows for advertising of users’ game by the bidding process. Gamepasses and developers products can also be created and a percentage of revenues from them returns to Roblox.

Like other modern games, Roblox games are played using an array of input devices such as mouse, touchpads, and special keys on the keyboard. While playing in the platform, users have the liberty to switch between first person mode and third person mode.

Depending on status and roles in the Roblox platform, users can create, buy, and sell a number of virtual items including T-shirts, Pants, Hats, gears, and packages. Items can be purchased with Rebux and Rebux can be earned from creating games, as well as revenues made from selling shirts, hats, microtransactions and other items sold on the platform.

Currently, Roblox has about 1.7 million creators and over 30 million monthly users. During the 2017 developer’s conference, it was reported that Roblox creators have already earned up to $30 million in 2017. The platform is still growing and there is bound to be more developments in the coming years.
